William Shakespeare (April 1564 – April 1616) was born and brought
up in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. His father was a
tradesman and his mother was a rich lady. He went to the King Edward VI Grammar
school in Stratford and studied Latin grammar and literature. He married Anne
Hathaway and they had three children.
He began a successful career in London as an
actor, writer, and part owner of a playing
company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Shakespeare
produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613 He was an English poet and playwright,
widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. His plays have
been translated into every major living language and are performed more often
than those of any other playwright.
Shakespeare
plays were mainly comedies and histories. He then wrote mainly tragedies. His famous plays were The
Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth.
